The Arizona Department of Revenue has issued a news release warning employers about a Form W-2 email phishing scam that attempts to steal employee W-2 information from company payroll or human resources departments. Cybercriminals may send an email to a payroll office or human resource employee requesting employee W-2 data and, in some cases, payroll information, which may appear as a request directly from an organization executive. The department urges all employers to be vigilant and share information with their payroll, finance and human resources employees about this W-2 scam. Employers are also requested to consider creating an internal policy on the distribution of employee W-2 information. An organization receiving a W-2 scam email should contact the department’s Identity Theft Call Center at (602) 716-6300, and the W-2 scam emails should be forwarded to email@example.com with “W2 Scam” in the subject line. The department also urges organizations that have fallen victim to this scam to immediately file a complaint with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
