Illinois discusses W-2 electronic filing, storage requirements

The Illinois Department of Revenue published an informational bulletin on the electronic filing requirements for withholding income tax purposes. Starting with the 2017 tax year, employers and taxpayers are required to electronically file federal Forms W-2, Wage and Tax Statement; W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement; and W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings. Further, starting with the 2018 tax year, employers and taxpayers must file Form IL-941, Illinois Withholding Income Tax Return, electronically. Taxpayers may request a waiver of the electronic filing requirements by contacting Taxpayer Assistance at 1 800 732-8866 or 217 782-3336 and requesting a waiver form. Further, the bulletin explains the process of electronically filing the aforesaid forms.
The Department has also updated a publication that provides information to employers and taxpayers about Illinois’ electronic filing programs and the related storage requirements for Forms W-2, W-2c, W-2G, and 1099. The publication also discusses the electronic filing methods; third-party service to file information returns; bulk filing methods; due dates; and additional information.
