Deductibles in more than one-third of small group health plans exceeded ACA limits, study finds

Ninety-six percent of Bronze plans in the Small Business Health Options (SHOP) Exchange had deductibles over the $2,000 cap set by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a study by HealthPocket. For details, see ¶2073U.

IRS, HHS, DOL issue guidance on risk-reducing meds, cost-sharing, MHPAEA, and reward programs

The Health and Human Services Department (HHS), Labor Department (DOL), and the IRS have issued a new set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the implementation of an assortment of provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the ACA’s effect on provisions of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA). High Court denies review of ERISA administrator’s benefit denial

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined an insured’s petition to review an Eleventh Circuit’s ruling that affirmed a denial of benefits based in part on an ERISA plan administrator’s affidavit that proffered a post-hoc rationale for its decision. For more information, see ¶2073W.

The focus of a webinar given January 15, 2014 by Ron Hildebrandt, Senior Vice President of Market & Products for Virgin Pulse, and Fran Melmed, Virgin Pulse’s owner was to give employers ideas with regard to broadening their wellness plans to include what the speakers call “Total Quality of Life.” Instituting or improving upon a company’s wellness programs could improve talent management and drive engagement, they theorized. Procedures updated for furnishing of technical advice by Employee Plans or Exempt Organizations Technical Offices

The IRS has issued updated procedures for the furnishing of technical advice memoranda (TAM) by Employee Plans (EP) Technical or Exempt Organizations (EO) Technical offices to EP and EO Examinations Area managers, EP and EO Determinations managers, or an Appeals Area Director in the employee plans (including actuarial matters) and the exempt organizations areas.
