Employers held health benefit cost growth to 4.1% in 2012, the smallest increase in 15 years

Decisive action by employers in 2012 – in particular, moving more employees into low-cost consumer-directed health plans and beefing up health management programs – was rewarded with the lowest average annual cost increase since 1997, according to the National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans, conducted annually by Mercer. No life insurance benefits due where coverage ended before insured’s death

The insurer of two employer-sponsored life insurance policies was not required to pay proceeds to an insured’s beneficiary because the insured’s coverage ended prior to his death, according to a federal court in Michigan. For details, see ¶2062Q.

HHS temporarily prevented from enforcing ACA contraceptive provision against Christian publishing company

A Christian publishing company with a self-insured health plan is entitled to a preliminary injunction temporarily preventing the U.S. government from enforcing the contraceptive coverage provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has ruled. Departments issue proposed regulations on nondiscriminatory wellness programs under ACA

The Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Labor and the Treasury (Departments) have jointly released proposed rules on nondiscriminatory wellness programs in group health coverage pursuant to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The proposed regulations replace the wellness program provisions of the HIPAA nondiscrimination regulations issued in 2006 (2006 regulations), but they do not modify any other provisions of those regulations.
